چکیده

In the present study size and structure of Mediterranean medicinal leech (Hirudo verbana Carena, 1820) populations inhabiting wetlands around Lake Eğirdir (Turkey) were investigated. Population was estimated by removal methods, age classes for first time in leeches (Hirudinea) using “Modal Progression Analysis” body length frequencies Bhattacharya's method. The population biomass to be 1,562,696 ± 805,613 467.26 172.91 kg, respectively. Three identified; group 0+ dominant with 78.6%. While 89.9% individuals weighed less than 1 g, whereas broodstock represent only 7%. Body weight, condition factor found 0.52 1.19 4.5 2.4 cm 0.620 0.123, This reveals that H. is relatively well preserved there no significant threat sustainability exploitation populations. It concluded stability lake's water budget, variety abundance host undamaged wetlands, socioeconomic collectors, sales policies, effective activities conservation control units might affect status Eğirdir.

Scanning Behavior in the Medicinal Leech Hirudo verbana

While moving through their environment, medicinal leeches stop periodically and wave their head or body back and forth. This activity has been previously described as two separate behaviors: one called 'head movement' and another called 'body waving'. Here, we report that these behaviors exist on a continuum, and provide a detailed description of what we now call 'scanning'. Scanning-related be...

Serotonin modulates muscle function in the medicinal leech Hirudo verbana.

The body wall muscles of sanguivorous leeches power mechanically diverse behaviours: suction feeding, crawling and swimming. These require longitudinal muscle to exert force over an extremely large length range, from 145 to 46 per cent of the mean segmental swimming length. Previous data, however, suggest that leech body wall muscle has limited capacity for force production when elongated. Sero...

Identification of Aeromonas veronii genes required for colonization of the medicinal leech, Hirudo verbana.

Most digestive tracts contain a complex consortium of beneficial microorganisms, making it challenging to tease apart the molecular interactions between symbiont and host. The digestive tract of Hirudo verbana, the medicinal leech, is an ideal model system because it harbors a simple microbial community in the crop, comprising the genetically amenable Aeromonas veronii and a Rikenella-like bact...

Niabella hirudinis and Niabella drilacis sp. nov., isolated from the medicinal leech Hirudo verbana.

Two Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria, strains E96(T) and E90(T), were isolated from medicinal leeches (Hirudo verbana) and characterized by a polyphasic taxonomic approach. Phylogenetic analysis based on the nearly full-length 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that the two strains shared 98.1% sequence similarity and were affiliated with the genus Niabella within the phylum Bacteroidetes, with 94...

A new species of Hirudo (Annelida: Hirudinidae): historical biogeography of Eurasian medicinal leeches

Background: Species of Hirudo are used extensively for medicinal purposes, but are currently listed as endangered due to population declines from economic utilization and environmental pollution. In total, five species of Hirudo are currently described throughout Eurasia, with Turkey being one of the major exporters of medicinal leech, primarily H. verbana. Results: To define the distribution o...
